So you want to adopt a painfultruth.org rescue? Please read the following information and see if adopting from us is right for you. Dogs that are in our program are trained as much as we can while they are with us, many will continue to need more training. We have guidelines and restrictions on our dogs in order to keep them safe. Some may find this harsh and blunt but we take rescue work serious. You should take adopting one of our rescues serious as well. If you can make it through this page and continue on we welcome you to work with us.
Cost - $150-$250 - The donation is used to save another dog.
All dogs will have their shots current. A check up and free of parasites. Not all will be altered and if not will need to be altered by an agreed date between the adopters and us. Proof (certificate by vet) will need to be sent to us by the agreed date or we will reclaim ownership of the dog. In the summer months in our area dogs will be on Frontline and heartworm preventative if adopted to a warmer climate we will Frontline and start heart worm preventative on them before they leave.
The bottom line....
These dogs have been rescued from death. Many have had a rough start in life, they lack guidance and training. They are being given another chance at life and the last thing we want is to see is these dogs end up back in a shelter and on death row. They deserve better.
Is this for you?
If you want a instapet that is perfect and potty trained and no problems, turn away now. This is not what owning a dog is all about. Dogs need constant training and support in the home. We are not interested in adopters that are not true dog lovers. You must be willing to train and spend time with your adopted dog to help them flourish. Dogs have chewed wood in my house, damaged walls, damaged my belongings such as shoes and my coffee table. It is part of owning a dog. Puppies are chewers and they will create damage as you guide them and train them. That is a fact. They are not disposable and should not be thrown back at deaths door because you refuse to train them. It is a commitment!
Dogs should not be thrown back at the door of death because you don't have time or you decide to have a baby or move. When adopting a dog you need to take all of these into account and plan ahead. Dogs are not here on this Earth for temporary companionship when your life suits this need. You adopt them into your home for life. They are a part of your family and you take them into account with all situations that arise.
Sit down and take a look at your lifestyle and learn about breeds that best fit it. If you are a young couple planning to get married and have children for example adopting a very small dog or a very large dog is not the best answer. Small dogs do not do well with children in general and can become snippy and large dogs can knock down small children and hurt them. Beagles, smaller hounds are wonderful family pets and wonderful with children.
If you are an older couple the last thing you probably need is a high strung young Weimaraner. If you really like the breed adopt a senior so they are not so full of energy.
Also when it comes to dogs that are black listed and banned in many areas such as Pit Bulls, Bully breeds, Shepherds and Husky type breeds you need to research the laws in your area. Understand that even the laws state purebreds that a mix that looks like that type may be singled out. Don't risk it.
Apartment life....
We do adopt out to those that live in apartments but restrict on what breeds or dogs are adoptable to those that do not own their own home. If you live in an apartment we do not recommend large breeds or bully breeds. We ask you think ahead, will you move to an apartment that does not allow dogs? Will your apartment complex decide to go not pets? What will you do in that case? We do this on a case by case basis.
Violence
If there is domestic violence in your home please do not bring animals into it. Often they are caught in between the violence and pay dearly for it. Dogs are not objects to beat or hit on. We will not tolerate this type of training either, it doesn't work. It creates either a mean dog or a timid scared dog and both types can lash out. Just don't do it.
Guidelines
- We do long distance adoptions with precautions in place and a contract for such adoptions. We will state if the dog is available for out of area adoption.
- Not all dogs will be allowed to be adopted long distance. There are some dogs that we need to keep close to home. No dog that is not spayed or neutered will be adopted out of our area. We will have the dog fixed for you at your cost before transport if you wish to adopt on that is unaltered.
- If you adopt a dog long distance we will try to set up volunteer based transport to get the dog to you. However, if we can't arrange it you may need to step up and help with transport.
- If you wish to get rid of your adopted dog, we will take the dog back no questions asked. However, you need to work with us on setting up transportation to get the dog back to us.
- Dogs adopted from usĀ
- Must be an indoor dog and part of the family
- Will not be tied up outside
- Will not have a shock collar used unless directed by a professional dog behaviorist trainer.
- Will not have a pinch collar used or choke collar used unless walking on a leash.
- Must be kept safe with a high fenced in, clean yard. The dogs can not be allowed to run loose.
- Adopters will respect our restrictions on adoptable dogs such as no other dogs, no cats, and ages of children. We put these restrictions there for a reason. To ignore them only sets the adoption up to fail.
- Must be fixed! If they are adopted not altered you will be responsible by contract to fix them at your cost and provide proof of such by a agreed length of time.
- Must receive vet care such as shots, routine checks and put on heart worm preventative.
- Adopters must be educated on the type of breed they wish to adopt.
- Home checks will be done and a follow up a week or two after your adopt to make sure everything is running smooth. The adoption is not final until the follow up visit is complete and we feel the dog is comfortable and happy in your home.
