Update

I have been very busy with life and on top of that rescue. The area that gets hit the hardest is the site. I am working hard to keep updates of all the dogs funneling through us and their stores but that is about it right now.

The wonderful thing about rescue is that you may just start out by yourself and feel all alone in this huge war around you. In no time at all you start to meet some of the most caring, wonderful and supportive people. They are everywhere.

Dana came to me looking to adopt Penny and she is still wanting to do so. She is being smart and taking her time and letting her family ease into the adoption.  On top of that she is a writer and will be able to edit the site. She wants to volunteer her time and work on the site. You should be seeing her joining us on here.

My sister today was on the local radio station and gave us a shameless plug. Thanks KSOO!!!

Painfultruth.org is also working to start a Mile High Weimaraner chapter in Sioux Falls, SD. It would work well with the Rapid City chapter. This rescue is something I deeply support. They have a passion for Weimaraners and the Mile High Weimaraner Club has a top notch rescue for the breed.  Weimaraners are celebrated, loved and adored by all involved in this rescue group. Like many rescue groups out there, in order to save a dogs life they at times need to board them. The downside is a dog has to sit in boarding until a foster home opens up, but the upside is their lives are saved. This is expensive and also hard on the dog.

What can help? Donating money to help them pay for boarding and the more foster families out there the more dogs can be saved.

They operate out of Denver, Colorado but are in a few other states as chapters are opening up.  Go to their site and donate, or sign up to foster and volunteer.

Join them on facebook as well!

Holidays….

It is hard for me to not think about all the homeless animals out there in shelters that are waiting for homes this time of year. Many just have a concrete slab to sleep on, no blanket, no stuffed animal to cuddle with. They are not in a comfortable place. Shelter life is so hard on animals and many sit and just die waiting. You can see the heartache in their eyes.  We sit around with family in comfort, many of us have companion animals of our own that we snuggle and talk to. We enjoy them. I am asking you to think about the homeless animals and do one of the following at least... the more the better.

  • Take at least one bag of dog food or cat food to your local shelter.
  • Take in old towels and blankets to your local shelter.
  • Take old stuffed animals in to your local shelter for some comfort.
  • Sign up to be a volunteer at your local shelter.
  • Sign up to be a foster home for your local shelter.
  • Offer to take a dog or cat home for Christmas Vacation to get a break from the shelter.
  • Grab a death row dog or cat and just give them that extra time they need by opening up your home.
  • Donate money to your local shelter.

These are just some simple things that have such a large impact and yet none of them cost that much. There is a lot of help out there but not enough. There are so many animal lovers that can make such a huge difference if you just try. Just one thing is all I ask, Just one.

Penny

Penny

Penny on Death Row

I have never owned a Pit Bull or even a Pit Bull mix. I am not against the breed. To be honest I think they are neat but they are not the dog breed for me. I am more into Weimaraners and Shepherd breeds.  I do disagree with the bad labeling of breeds. I do not think Pit Bulls are worse then any other dog. I believe the worst thing for dogs in this world are those that care for them. Many people have dogs that should not even own them. Most behavior problems in dogs are a lack of training or bad training and living conditions. Some are genetic but that is pretty rare.

I do think that Pits should be in a rescue situation with people that understand their breed and can properly screen to find them that right home. Penny's time is running out and she has yet to be saved. She is sitting there couting down the days to death. She is still a puppy.

I asked to try and rescue her. To take her it has to be accepted by the Pit rescue in her state. I am hoping they give her and I both a chance. I know our home is good for her and our training methods are verbal, we don't hit or scream. We use firm voices, nothing in life is free and we work hard at training to make our fosters good dogs. Potty train them, teach them basic commands and all around teach them manners to be a good dog in the home. This helps the new owner have a head start and as long as they keep working with the dog the hard part is done in training them. I feel this gives them the best chance at making it in their forever home.

I am crossing my fingers that Penny comes off death row and makes the trip up to South Dakota to safety and a comfortable house to live in as she learns. Eventually a good home. It will take longer to adopt her out I am sure, but it will be worth it. I will not turn my back on any breed.

Laika

t_laika04_204I posted Laika in the hero section of the website and that is just what she is. I did not place her there to boast that she gave her life for a space mission.  It was not something she made the choice to do.  She is famous, a famous pioneer! I doubt that. She isn't a pioneer. She was a stray dog, plucked from the streets of Moscow, Russia and put through hell.

She died in vain in my opinion and it was a worthless mission and they learned very little. There was a song wrote for Laika and it has one line that is so true. "I'm ashamed to be your hero" and I completely agree with that.

The best thing I can do is tell her story for those to read to know her, to understand that she gave her life. The hell she went through before her death.  Her mission was a lie to the world how she survived for days when actually she died just hours into the mission.  Her body in a capsule so small she couldn't move. She was chained. A bag fixed to her bottom to defecate in. She spent three days in that soon to be coffin before launch. Three long days. She was sent up into space where she was so stressed out and hot she died circling this Earth.

Laika's "coffin" circled the Earth 2,570 times and burned up in the Earth's atmosphere on 4 April 1958.

Read her story on our site here.
