Little Brown Dog (LBD) Deserves Justice

She has been named Little Brown (LBD) Dog by the care takers at UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine. A terrier mix that is just over a year old that survived a nightmare event on November 3rd,  2009. Knoxville Police Department Animal Control Unit brought LBD after they arrested a man, Jimmy Lovell. Lovell was seen by bystanders dragging LBD behind his pickup truck. The dog was seriously injured and bystanders screaming at Lovell he was dragging a dog did not stop his tirade of animal abuse. Lovell was intentionally dragging the dog for a few miles.

“There was like 15, 20, 30 other people standing out there, just hollering at him, telling him, you’re dragging a dog, just running down the street, telling him, stop, and he never would stop,” said Ron Hurst, who witnessed the incident.

“It was bad, he had blood all over (her,)” Hurst said of the dog. “It was just laying there in the seat, wasn’t even moving, looked like it was dead.”

Eventually, Lovell did stop the truck and get out to grab LBD. He only yelled at bystanders and threw the dog in the truck. Later on LBD was found tossed on the side of the road like a piece of trash. Lovell was arrested and LBD was taken in for immediate attention for her wounds.

"I saw her the night that she came in," Hodshon said. "And she has these horrible wounds all over her. You'd go up to the cage, and she comes to you. Wants to be held, even though she's been through this horrible ordeal. She's a really special dog. ... Even in horrible pain, with these horrible wounds, she still has the trust." Knoxnews.com

LBD suffered horrific thermal burns to her legs and chest area. Her bones were damaged by being ground down in some areas of her legs from being dragged for so long on the pavement. The staff and students daily have attended to LBD wounds and have said they are healing really well.  Specific types of skin grafts were done on LBD to hep make sure cosmetically she would achieve the best results. It will allow for her hair to mostly grow back.

"It's amazing," she said. "I've never seen a case from very start to finish of contaminated, fresh wounds to them being completely healed and closed. So watching all the stages of wound healing actually happen is pretty amazing. Especially because she's done it so quickly.

"And she's wonderful. She's a sweetie. It's amazing in itself that she has so much trust in everyone."

Through it all everyone seems to agree that LBD is still trusting of people and a lovebug of a dog. She was unable to move at first, sitting in the same position as she was left in. Today she is moving around more and more and enjoying the attention she is receiving. The staff and students design special designs for LBD with her bandages. Thanksgiving she was showing off a turkey placed on her bandages and spent a few nights in a home with one of the doctors.

“Basically, (she has) skin wounds, ligament wounds, joint wounds and bone wounds on all four paws, but she also has a large wound over her sternum or over her breast bone that has been created in a similar manner,” Dr. Patricia Sura said. “Some of her bones have been sheared, so to speak, so they’re only half the width of what they once were because they’ve been ground down to that extent.”

As for Mr. Lovell, who we would like to mention is a 45yr old man, he has been charged at this time with a felony charge for the allegations of dragging LBD behind his truck. He is awaiting trial and has spoken to say it was an accident. We would like to believe that, but the countless bystanders screaming at him he was dragging a dog is a large clue to his crappy defense. Not to mention Lovell stepping out of his truck to yell and scream at bystanders for telling him he was dragging a dog. He says he is sorry "and stuff".

There is a public push to make sure that Lovell is brought to justice for LBD. Animal rights advocates are very keen on the lack of punishment for such horrible animal abuse cases. LBD deserves justice. We will be following this case as it moves through the courts and we hope that a judge has the balls to make Lovell pay for his actions. It is obvious he is heartless and disturbed.
