Grand Theft?

There is a trend out there that many folks are unaware of. The trend of people being allowed to abuse and neglect their pets and when someone steps in for the animal they are charged with trespassing, theft and lord knows what other charges.

I ran across the story of Troy A. Jackson, 36, who is an animal advocate associated with a Boise-based animal rescue group for over a decade. He has been charged with Grand Theft from Jefferson County, Idaho for helping a dog and her puppies.

The story started to unfold almost a month ago when someone had hit a dog with a car in the Mud Lake area. Deputies received a report of an injured dog and went to the residence of Raul Torres to investigate. They talked to Mr. Torres and gave him a few days to get the dog proper treatment. Meanwhile the dog is laying in the snow with puppies howling in pain from her injuries. It was so gracious of them to give him a few days to get veterinary care for the dog who was severely injured.

Troy Jackson heard of the story and drove down to the home of Raul Torres and knocked on his door and said "Can we help you?" Torres agreed and helped Mr. Jackson load the mother dog and her puppies into the vehicle to go receive treatment. The mother dog and her puppies were taken to get treatment. The mother dog had a broken hip and fractured leg. Remember Torres was allowed by the deputies to have a few days to get the dog treatment even though it had broken bones and was allowed to lay out in the snow. This dog happens to be Barbie. Jackson took her to Ada County Veterinary Hospital and her injuries required surgery.

At this time Jackson was trying to work with Torres offering money in exchange for Barbie and her puppies. Torres wanted some of the puppies back and during the negotiations over the dogs Jackson never heard back from Torres. Instead what happened was at 1am in the morning Jackson's house was surrounded and he was arrested for Grand Theft.

Torres has yet to be charged with animal neglect.
